There’s a cliché spouted so often by the music press that its almost lost all meaning – that the music of SuchAndSuch completely defies classification. But when it comes to Ebony Bones, it still rings true –. if the Pipettes had gone feral in a funky punk rock neon jungle, they’d still only be halfway through an overly convoluted metaphor to sounding like Ebony Bones. Set to headline the Friday night of the first ever Music Towers Weekender, we thought it’d be a good idea to have a few words with frontwoman Ebony and see what she had in store for us.
Bearing in mind my complete failure to come up with a witty soundbite to encapsulate the freaky rhythms Ebony Bones thunder out, it seems apt to ask Ebony how she would describe her sound.
“Smells like chicken - tastes like popcorn. If your best friend gets it, that's all that matters,” is her enigmatic reply. So what does that make her single, ‘Don’t Fart On My Heart’ all about? “People pissing on your leg and telling you its raining – (y’know, that ol’ chesnut.)”
That sense of fun goes with Ebony Bones whatever it is they’re doing – be it an interview or a live show. After all, this is the woman who on her MySpace describes herself as ‘Harry Potter with a vagina’ (“It’s just a cheap joke,” she quips. “I’m full of them.”). Even though everyone is getting bigger, brighter, louder and more visual when playing live – anyone who has ever seen Ebony Bones live will testify that you guys take it a step further.
“Its nice having audiences that allow us to have fun on stage, jump around like 5 year olds, and act like the autistic kids we are.
“That's really all it’s about for me. The clothes and the visuals are just an extension of that. It’s about changing people’s perceptions.”
It’s that kind of spirit that has garnered the attention of the great and the good – this year Ebony Bones put on one of the most memorable shows of this year’s Glastonbury festival. How did they find performing at arguably one of the most famous festivals in the world?
