San Francisco's Scissors For Lefty are going places. The four multi-instrumentalists released their home-recorded debut 'Bruno' last year to moderate fanfare, and are now gearing up to drop the follow-up, 'Underhand Romance', in October. In the meantime they've been touring with Arctic Monkeys and Dirty Pretty Things, and are now wandering the UK in support of such bands as Metric and Panic! At The Disco.
Their music revolves around the quirky lyrics of vocalist Bryan Garza, which walk the line between amusingly anecdotal and cringingly naff with varying success. But their excitable outlook and jangly indie tunes have won them friends in high places, and it looks as though their ascendance will continue into the future.
Daniel Robson got on the blower with Bryan as they started their current UK tour.
How are you finding the UK so far?
Bryan: "This is like our home away from home. We love it! We just wish we had more time to look around. There's nothing like a good jog in the morning to satisfy your curiosity about where you are."
How's the record going? It's not out here yet right?
"No, we can't wait. We finished it back in May and, not trying to sound too boastful, we love it. It was a good collaborative effort. We all took a month off work to nail the pre-production, and then recorded all the music in about a week. And then we worked on the little touches and vocals for the next couple of weeks. It's a really upbeat, playful album. And we're already working on the next one. I like recording. It makes you feel like you're not being stagnant if you're making new songs."
Will you be touring it the world over?
"We're a pretty thrifty band, so affording the gasoline to go from one show to another is usually tough enough for us. But I'm hoping that once the album's released, we'll be known a bit more in a few parts of the world and hopefully we can gather 10 or 15 people to come to our shows, haha."
Who are your peers?
"It's hard to say. We get grouped into the indie scene. We like to be left of centre and we don't go for clean, hi-fi sounds, but we like to be acceptable. We just got off tour with Dirty Pretty Things and we had a really great time with them and with their audience, and the same with Arctic Monkeys. But then again, we have a pretty different sound from those bands."
