Two years ago, THE OTHERS were leaders in the flash-mob, guerrilla gig movement. Their fan base (the 853 posse) multiplied daily thanks to the charming charisma of front man Dominic Masters. There was music wherever they went as well mayhem and headlines. Then they released their debut album. And then nothing happened.
Now almost eighteen months since their last release, there’s a new album and a UK tour. JANE GAZZO catches up with big-haired bass player JOHNNY OTHERS and tries to find out just what’s been going on…
Hello Johnny.. How are you?
A little tired - I’ve only just got up – It’s 13.13. It was a late gig at Kill All Hippies last night. I have been getting the 4am train from Victoria home a lot over the past few days...
Where are you right now?
In my living room. Still in my pyjamas.
You’re mid- tour aren’t you? How’s it going?
We played Islington Academy last night for the opening of Kill All Hippies. The night before we played the wedding of the first 853 marriage! I have learnt that the best weddings to go to are the ones where you don’t really know anyone or have any family. However, I was very pleased to meet Fruitbat form Carter USM who were one of the first bands I ever saw live. His new band was our support (which was quite weird) and they played some Carter songs! I hadn’t seen them live for about ten years so it was very exciting. And Fruitbat seemed happy to learn that Dom and me were big fans.
It’s a very big tour...
Oh, it’s not too big. The first two tours were far too big (5 weeks each with maybe only 1 trip home). I had to spend so much money on underwear and socks as I refused to compromise putting on a fresh pair of socks and pants everyday.
Do you enjoy being away from home?
For me, being away from home is the least enjoyable part of touring. I would probably be happy to tour all year if I could come home and sleep in my own bed each night. But it’s always so nice to see everyone again it keeps it lively and fun for two or three weeks. I’m pretty used to having my own space and to go from that to sharing a room with two other people is quite extreme.
