Consistently bubbling at the top of the Parisian chic scene, the Kitsune collective combines a record label, design team and party organisation that specialises in impossibly cool events held at equally cool locations.
With its empire spreading into shops and their sites on London and other European capitals, we caught up with Gildas Loac, formerly of Daft Punk’s Roule label and now the force behind Kitsune, to get the low down on the label and their future plans.
“Kitsuné means ‘fox’ in Japanese, and it’s also our company, based in Paris - and a little bit in London,” explains Gildas. “The company’s comprised of an architect, graphic artists (who also work for Matin Margiela, Hussein Chalayan, Air, The Cardigans and London’s Royal College Of Art) and a music art-director with connections to Daft Punk.”
“The label is currently on the way to releasing our fifth – and favourite – compilation: ‘Kitsuné Maison II’, which will be out at the end of April.”
“The label is run by, in no particular order, Masaya Kuroki, Patrick Lacey, Benjamin Reichen, Kajsa Stahl Maki Suzuki and myself and was founded in 2001.
As well as releasing records Kitsune has made textile and clothing collaborations with Bali Barret, Rico, Gaspard Yurkievich, The Rapture, Air, Daft Punk, colette, APC, United Arrows, Bonjour Records (Tokyo), Yoshida-Porter, New Balance, Loopwheeler."
“And it has made collaborations with companies such as Sony Japan, +81, Shima Hair saloon and has thrown parties in Paris, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka,Stockholm, London, Brussels, Modena, and… well... everywhere.”
“We’ve also now got our own store in Paris at 1 Rue Thérèse and have more than 30 retailers for our clothes around the world including Dover Street Market in London.
“Acts such as Digitalism, Captain Comatose, Black Strobe, Manhead, Freeform five, Zongamin, Cosmo Vitelli ,Gonzales, Man with Guitar, Tom Vek, VHS or Beta, Volga Select, Simian Mobile Disco, Chikinki, Joakim, Hot Chip etc .. have all been part of a kitsuné project. and this month kitsuné is releasing a Bloc Party single in France.”
Kitsune's latest 12" release is released this month and sees Berlin's new prince of dirty basslines, Boys Noize, crashing headlong into Bloc Party's 'Banquet'.
