Coachella Festival takes place on a polo ground in Indio (it seems like it is retirement resort town) So south of the Joshua tree and about a hundred miles on the 10 out of Los Angeles and I'm hell excited about busting down there in the covertible PT cruiser (ok so it is a bit of camp car).
Arriving and the weather glorious, the line-up is promising with a good mix of relative rarities in Depeche Mode, Tool, Massive Attack, Daft Punk, Gnarls Barclay's first ever gig and Madonna looking for a little credibility. Also incredibly strong UK representation in Franz Ferdinand, The Go! Team, Mogwai, James Blunt, Coldcut, The Zutons, Imogen Heap amongst a bunch of others.
The site is amazing, surrounded by mountains and palm trees, the grass is spongy and feels perfect under the toes. Chelsea football ground probably spends millions to get the same result. The converted polo ground has nice features, a fountain and waterfall or two and a half life type horse sculpture that rises 50 feet in the air. Each corner of the site has giant beams shooting into the sky and all the eating areas have a lot of plants and nice furniture. The site feels like no expense has been spared. The VIP (guest) Area is raised over the site and has clear views of the main stage although there seems to be no seeming running water on site. Found one tap for 50 thousand people? Why does everyone look so clean? They might be plastic…
Saturday, can’t remember anything from Saturday besides the confusion at the festival rules as Lady Sovereign would say ‘no dis, no dat, no hoods no hat’. Only remember catching
My Morning Jacket - Saturday
These Kentucky hairy bears are playing the other stage, a stage set to an open backdrop of mountains and palm trees. The afternoon set is rupturing the audience and they are strutting some big sounding almost Pink Floyd songs drifting over the valley. A wash of guitars is a lovely start.
Daft Punk - Saturday
The Crowd are excited friendly and impatient; cheers of Daft Punk like a Metallica concert. The audience shout with every twitch of the curtain and the anticipation of the French electrofunksters is second to none. The atmosphere is electric and makes it the most exciting gig of the festival.
