That Bobby's a sly one. Not content with being the brains behind Top 30-selling band The Pipettes, who happen to be one of the best young pop groups in the country, the greedy bastard also produces dreamy bedroom electronica as Monster Bobby. Stop it Bobby! Leave some talent for everyone else, whydon'tcha.
In fact, Monster Bobby came before The Pipettes, as Bobby found refuge in his university accommodation following the break-up of his old band Ice-Nine (featuring The Brakes' Marc Beatty and The Upper Room's Jon Barnett) some six years ago. Splitting his time between Brighton's trendy Kemptown and London's gritty New Cross, Bobby records his songs using basic studio gear, his bruised vocals floating sweetly over lo-fi electronics and guitar.
Bobby! If Monster Bobby had a fight with The Pipettes, who'd win? And who would you be rooting for?
"I wouldn't be rooting for anyone - I'd be on the floor having the shit kicked out of me by The Pipettes. Have you seen them girls? They tough, man."
What are the stories behind the songs on your single, 'Heaven Hides Nothing'?
"There are no stories behind the songs. It's all there on the surface I think. I'd be wary of trying to read off my biography from my song lyrics - I do lie quite a lot. Honesty, authenticity and originality seem to be quite outdated concepts, and no longer really workable in pop music. I have no desire to stay true to any real or imagined roots or to express my innermost thoughts and deepest emotions. I'll leave that to the David Grays and the emo kids."
How did the single come about?
"My good friend Nick wanted to start a record label and he asked me if I'd like to be its first release. I think next he's planning something by a great Swedish band called The Lovekevins. Nick and I share a big love for the current Swedish indie pop scene - he puts on a great night at The Social in London called Tack!Tack!Tack! for live Swedish music."
What's your writing process?
"I'm not sure at the moment... I spend quite a lot of time on my own travelling, either just walking around the city or on trains, and it quite often happens at these times that a melody or a snatch of lyrics will pop into my head which I will later struggle to make sense of. Sometimes I'm just playing around with my sampler and keyboards and things for ages and I come up with a sound I like or a beat or a chord pattern or something and then I'll eventually round it off into a proper piece with words and all the rest of it."
