What's your DJ handle and real name
Melnyk
Where are you from?
The frozen prairies of Western Canada.
How would you define your style?
Electrodiscopunk’n’pop. My dj sets reflect the more spunkier side of the music that I love and make. And there’s always something to singalong to….
What got you into DJing/ making music?
I’ve been playing music since I was a young’un – im a classically
trained musician. But in my late teens when the desire to dance took hold I
found there was nowhere in my hometown that played the music I loved, so I
started my own club. After moving to London I met Sara Berg, who invited me to be part of the Gaymonkey family and to start producing our own music.
What are your earliest musical memories?
I remember my very first piano lesson, and learning how to position
your hands by imagining there was an orange under your palm. i think the first song I learned was called Ten Little Indians.
What are the best clubs you've ever played?
Anywhere in Stockholm – the Swedes are a very receptive audience. The
Cock in London is still my favourite club to play and dance.
What was your worst club experience?
Having drunk girls try to get my attention by squeezing themselves
between me and the decks. Nasty!
Which DJs/ Producers do you most admire?
Ewan Pearson, Tiga, Felix da Housecat, Tiefschwarz. They all
consistently produce brilliant, cutting edge music. I’m also a huge fan of Bjork, who I consider to be the last true musical genius.
Which labels and genres are impressing you at the moment?
Any electrohouse with good bass and a great hook. Great Stuff out of
Germany has been putting out fantastic 12’s over the past year. Kitsune
delivers exciting music that isn’t a slave to any genre. And I will always have
a place in my heart for Kompakt and Beautycase.
What music off-the-mainstream should we be looking out for?
I tend to shy away from the “mainstream” because I hate anything that is
overhyped. Look out for brilliant Swedish electronica that’s coming your way
this year on Gaymonkey!
